Back in Black

Well, vacation is coming to an end. In some ways it was disappointing-- our trip to the Catskills was canceled due to Hurricane Irene. We weathered the storm ok in Center Moriches (pun somewhat intended) but as it turns out, the Catskills were pummeled by the hurricane. It's kind of hard to believe; we are the sitting ducks in the Atlantic Ocean on Long Island and yet we were largely missed. The Catskills, on the other hand are 100 miles away from the ocean, and they've been declared a disaster area. How ironic is that?

I've done a lot of reading, very little writing. It is good to recharge like this every once in a while. On the hit parade were Tom Clancy's "Dead or Alive" (not quite finished), Bo Giertz' "Christ's Church" (should be required reading for all pastors), and also started Grisham's "The Confession"

I downloaded some great Christmas music from iTunes, the latest being "Bekkante Lieder zur Advents und Weihnachtszeit" containing one of my favorite hymn settings, "Frohlocket, Ihr Volker Auf Erden". We sang that as our opening piece in the Concordia, Bronxville Tour Choir during the 78-79 Academic year. I listened to the entire 2+ hour album while cleaning up debris in our yard. Multiple times!!

As we were in town, I did work a couple of EMS shifts. I'm glad the summer is over because we had some really bad calls this summer: a 2 year old drowning, a woman drugged and raped at a beach club ( that should be shut down because this isn't the first time), a suicide attempt where the patient cut his throat, some bad accidents, a woman burned over 50 percent of her body when she threw a block of frozen veggies in her deep fryer, a fatal house fire (different from Ms. Deep-fry) and those were the ones I had. The various squads I work with had even more than that. It seems that people were very stupid this summer, more than usual. As they say, EMS gets to see the Candidates for the Darwin Awards first! I just hate kid calls, though. Fence your stinking pools!

So now it's time to put the finishing touches on the sermon. I look forward to my first day back on Sunday.

Here endeth the pondering, at least for tonight :)
